Our last full month of summer is here and we plan on enjoying every single second of it! August is generally the hottest and driest month of the year. Deep Creek Lake’s water temperature is the warmest it will be all year, too. August is definitely the month to take those sunrise trips out onto the water! This month is packed with tons of fun things to do all over Garrett County. Check out some of our favorite things to do this month below!
Garrett County Agricultural Fair – The fair is back and better than ever! This week-long event features live music, awesome events, the best food you’ll eat all year, animal and art displays, and of course, carnival rides! Some of the evening events include a demolition derby, truck and tractor pull, and mud bog. It’s hard to fit it all into one day, which is why almost everyone ends up going multiple times! Railey Realty will also have our booth set up in one of the display barns if you’d like to sign up for a chance to win prizes and gift cards and talk about real estate! You can read the full schedule of events here.
Enjoy Summer in Downtown Oakland – Oakland is the place to be this summer!! Our great small town offers so many wonderful weekly summer activities that are completely free to the public. On Thursdays, catch the Pocket Park open-air screening of a popular children’s movie under the pavilion at the town parking lot. Bring your chairs and snacks and settle in for a great evening! On Fridays, the pavilion hosts the Little Yough Music Festival. Enjoy the musical stylings of several local and very talented music groups under the cover of the pavilion or on the banks of the river. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, you can catch the local farmers market at the pavilion, too! Vendors come from all over the county with fruits, vegetables, homemade goods, soaps, and so much more. All events are rain or shine! The town parking lot is also home to Devler’s Ice Cream! Downtown Oakland is packed with museums and shops and restaurants; so make a day or afternoon or your trip to our great small town!
Catch a Car (and Airplane!) Show – Head to the Garrett County Regional Airport August 17 for the annual Garrett County Wings & Wheels event! This fun event features small planes and cars on display, demonstrations, planes taking off and landing, food, and more! Located just a few minutes outside of the lake area, it’s a great event to check out! You can also catch a fun new car show in Accident on August 9. The Drive in Dinner & Car Cruise In will be held at the GEARS Center and will offer a 1950s themed car-hop diner with servers coming right to your car for your order! Proceeds from this event will benefit the local robotics team.
Deep Creek Poker Cruise – Enjoy all the fun of a poker cruise from your boat! The annual Deep Creek Poker Lake Cruise takes players across the lake, picking up different cards at each stop. At the end of the cruise, the best hand wins! The entry fee gets you a t-shirt and goody bag, too. This event benefits the Deep Creek Lions Club, who hosts several events at Deep Creek Lake for blind children, including tubing and camping in the summer and skiing in the winter! They also opened a dog park on Bumble Bee Road!
Deep Creek Boat Show - The Three Rivers Boat Show is back at Deep Creek! Enjoy food trucks, a fun outdoor kids zone, and of course, boats!! You can browse new boats, used boats for purchase, or even sell your boat. Enjoy this fun event this Labor Day Weekend!
Friendsville Days - Just north of Deep Creek Lake is the beautiful small town of Friendsville! Join the residents of Friendsville and Garrett County for the 39th Annual Friendsville Days Celebration! This event is free to attend and features a parade, live music, cornhole tournaments, inflatable fun for kids, pony rides, wing eating contest, sporting contests, and SO much more.
