Now that spring is officially here, we’re looking forward to spending more time outside! We all know the expression – ‘April showers bring May flowers’ – so don’t be disheartened if the forecast isn’t all sunshine, there’s still plenty to do. April is a fairly quiet month as far as events, which means it’s a great month to explore the area!
Top Springtime Activities:
Cast a Line – Fishing is a great springtime activity! It’s one of the few outdoor activities that involve water but don’t involve you getting wet – making it perfect for the mild spring weather. Our area offers several lakes and streams that are very popular for fishing, including Deep Creek Lake, Broadford Lake, Herrington Manor State Park Lake, New Germany State Park Lake, the Casselman River, and the Youghiogheny River! You do need a fishing license in Maryland, so make sure to renew online or stop by the DNR office or local tackle shop to get your license up to date!
Biking – April is also an excellent time to break out the bikes! With the snow (hopefully) well behind us, the mild temps keep you from getting too hot while still allowing for beautiful conditions to be outside. Mountain biking is very popular in our area! Fork Run Recreation Area and Deep Creek Lake State Park offer awesome and challenging routes. Road biking is also very popular in our area, especially with the challenging terrain. The roads department will be busy cleaning the cinders off the roads the next few weeks so you’ll have smooth sailing until next winter!
Hiking – We recommend hiking a lot…but that’s mostly because it’s one of the best ways to really see and experience the beauty of Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County. There’s not always a lot to do in what is considered our ‘off season,’ so getting out and enjoying our gorgeous parks is one way to shake your winter cabin fever. You’ll not only beat the heat by hiking in the spring, but you’ll also most likely beat the crowds, which can give you a more serene experience. It’s worth the drive to check out some of the parks you may not have visited yet, like New Germany State Park or Herrington Manor State Park!
Explore the Area – We know that vacations usually fill up fast with things you’re itching to do or try. With all of the lake activities still out of reach in April, it’s a great time to pick out some indoor or further away activities you wouldn’t normally consider. The Deep Creek Discovery Center is an incredible local attraction that holds weekly events geared towards children and all about nature and science. It’s a great rainy or chilly day activity that’s still educational. There’s also fun indoor attractions, like The Alley or Deep Creek Funzone! Spring is also a good time to explore some of the nearby local eateries in Grantsville, Accident, Friendsville, and Oakland; the places you may not normally have time to drive to but are absolutely worth the trip! Oakland is also home to several museums and is a fantastic place to spend a rainy afternoon.
We won’t lie and say we haven’t enjoyed the extra snow that March brought…but we are excited for the spring weather. This month will bring beautiful buds, flowers, and green grass to our landscape and hopefully plenty of sunshine!
