Another 23 inches of fresh powder fell on Garrett County and Deep Creek Lake yesterday. The skiing and snowboarding conditions were epic at the Wisp yesterday! This latest Nor'easter storm brings our winter season's total snow accumulation to well over 100 inches.
The Baltimore Sun ran a really good article explaining our unique winter weather patterns in Garrett County. We typically get regular snow from mid-December to mid-March each year. While some view the weather as a hassle it's a way of life in western Maryland and makes our area Snow much fun - skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing to name a few. I've even seen a few kite surfers out on the frozen lake the past few weeks. Our roads department and local plowing companies do an incredible job of keeping all the roads open but 4WD or AWD vehicles are definitely recommended while visiting.
For home and property owners in Garrett County there are precautions you should always take to avoid potential disasters in our unique winter climate. Frozen pipes can and do occur here. When it's really cold and the wind kicks up a frozen pipe can occur within hours. Always turn off your water at the main before you leave for any extended period of time. Another problem can be ice damming along roof lines and particularly in roof eaves near dormers. Always clean leaves from gutters and the eaves in the fall! Heat tape is also a great preventive measure to take. Feel free to call us if you would like local contractor recommendations.
