One of the biggest perks of Deep Creek Lake is the year-round appeal, because no matter the season, there’s always something to do and explore. One of the best local places to hang out all year is the Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center!!
Located right beside the Deep Creek Lake State Park, the Discovery Center offers a one-of-a-kind experience for visitors of all ages. They offer hands on activities that immediately relate to Deep Creek Lake in specific. Just walking through their beautiful building, you can view live creatures in custom habitats. Have you ever seen a soft shell turtle? You can see one at the Discovery Center! While there are plenty of activities for kids, it is a very fun experience for adults, too. As Instagram can testify, the black bear is a favorite for photos.
The Discovery Center also houses an aviary in part with Maryland’s Scales and Tales Program. This educational program is statewide, and is an incredible in-person experience! Learn about these awesome predatory birds and the role they play in our ecosystem in this rare chance to see them up close. Connected to the Deep Creek Lake State Park means you can park at the Discovery Center, spend time in the building learning, and then meander through the park and the various trails, too. There are also boat docks specifically for the Discovery Center, so you travel by boat in the summer!
While you can stop by any time they’re open, we definitely recommend checking out their events calendar and stopping by during one of their interactive activities! Kids can help feed birds in the aviary or the other critters, and even get the chance to touch some of them. They also offer things like making pinecone bird feeders, learning about nature and making crafts during the Science Room Fun events, or enjoying the Turtle Talk!
