October and fall usually bring to mind colorful leaves, pumpkin spice everything, crisp weather, and football. To those from Garrett County, though, October and fall usually bring to mind one thing in particular – Autumn Glory. The Autumn Glory Festival happens the second week of October each year, spanning 5 days and absolutely packed with things to do. It’s such a local holiday that even the schools close to allow families to fully enjoy the festivities. While it’s a special holiday for those who live here, it’s also a top weekend for those visiting Deep Creek Lake & Garrett County. The festival runs October 11-15 this year!
Wednesday - October 11
The first day of Autumn Glory includes the kick-off reception, a farmers market, and big savings at many Oakland businesses! The Glorious Harvest Farmers Market & Craft Show starts Wednesday and will be open from 9 am – 5 pm through Saturday at the Mountain Fresh Pavilion. Buy everything from produce to cheeses to handmade goods, all from local farmers and families. With the official start of the festival comes so many sales and discounts at local stores! Simon Pearce features an annual sale offering 20% off second quality glass products and you can even watch the glassblowing. To help commemorate 50 years of the Autumn Glory Festival, Simon Pearce designed three special pieces to be featured throughout the festival! You can also sign up to win one of these amazing pieces. Most stores in downtown Oakland and throughout the county will also be offering sales and deals for the weekend!
Thursday - October 12
Thursday of Autumn Glory is home to some of the favorite events all weekend. In addition to the farmers market and local sales, Thursday is home to the Fireman’s Parade and Oktoberfest! Starting at 4 pm at the Oakland Fire Hall, you can enjoy German style food, live music, and plenty of beer. Railey Realty has several volunteers to help serve beer throughout the night, make sure to come say hello! The streets of downtown Oakland are blocked off around 6 pm, allowing for safe mingling during both Oktoberfest and the parade. The nighttime Fireman’s Parade kicks off at dusk and showcases fire trucks, first responder vehicles, police units, local sports teams, dance teams, and so much more. Having the parade in the evening allows for the brilliant lights display from all of these vehicles to shine extra bright. After the parade has concluded, the streets stay closed and the rest of the evening is spent enjoying the rest of the Oktoberfest festivities, including local food stands and pitchers of your favorite beverages. Remember to please drink responsibly and have a designated driver!
Friday - October 13
Things really start heating up Friday, with schools closed and so many things to do, it’s usually a bustling day. The annual High Mountain Sports Ski & Snowboard Swap kicks off Friday morning, along with the annual tent sale at Bear Creek Traders! A local favorite for children on Saturday is the musical puppet show downtown at 11:30 am! The main event for Saturday, though, is the Grand Feature Parade, which kicks off at the top of Second Street at 1 pm. Last year, we teamed up with Deep Creek Lodging Company to build our very first float, and we're so excited to debut this year's creation!! The streets of Oakland are filled with people all day and it's an absolutely incredible environment and the place to be. Local food vendors are serving up delicious treats all day, there are wonderful new shops downtown to explore, and it's forecasted to be a beautiful day! Deep Creek Lodging will also have a booth set up on Third Street, stop by for free goodies and say hello.
