The 50th Annual Autumn Glory Festival | Deep Creek Lake & Garrett County, Maryland

October and fall usually bring to mind colorful leaves, pumpkin spice everything, crisp weather, and football. To those from Garrett County, though, October and fall usually bring to mind one thing in particular – Autumn Glory. The Autumn Glory Festival happens the second week of October each year, spanning 5 days and absolutely packed with things to do. It’s such a local holiday that even the schools close to allow families to fully enjoy the festivities. While it’s a special holiday for those who live here, it’s also a top weekend for those visiting Deep Creek Lake & Garrett County. The festival runs October 11-15 this year!

Wednesday - October 11

The first day of Autumn Glory includes the kick-off reception, a farmers market, and big savings at many Oakland businesses! The Glorious Harvest Farmers Market & Craft Show starts Wednesday and will be open from 9 am – 5 pm through Saturday at the Mountain Fresh Pavilion. Buy everything from produce to cheeses to handmade goods, all from local farmers and families. With the official start of the festival comes so many sales and discounts at local stores! Simon Pearce features an annual sale offering 20% off second quality glass products and you can even watch the glassblowing. To help commemorate 50 years of the Autumn Glory Festival, Simon Pearce designed three special pieces to be featured throughout the festival! You can also sign up to win one of these amazing pieces. Most stores in downtown Oakland and throughout the county will also be offering sales and deals for the weekend!

Thursday - October 12

Thursday of Autumn Glory is home to some of the favorite events all weekend. In addition to the farmers market and local sales, Thursday is home to the Fireman’s Parade and Oktoberfest! Starting at 4 pm at the Oakland Fire Hall, you can enjoy German style food, live music, and plenty of beer. Railey Realty has several volunteers to help serve beer throughout the night, make sure to come say hello! The streets of downtown Oakland are blocked off around 6 pm, allowing for safe mingling during both Oktoberfest and the parade. The nighttime Fireman’s Parade kicks off at dusk and showcases fire trucks, first responder vehicles, police units, local sports teams, dance teams, and so much more. Having the parade in the evening allows for the brilliant lights display from all of these vehicles to shine extra bright. After the parade has concluded, the streets stay closed and the rest of the evening is spent enjoying the rest of the Oktoberfest festivities, including local food stands and pitchers of your favorite beverages. Remember to please drink responsibly and have a designated driver!

Friday - October 13

Things really start heating up Friday, with schools closed and so many things to do, it’s usually a bustling day. The annual High Mountain Sports Ski & Snowboard Swap kicks off Friday morning, along with the annual tent sale at Bear Creek Traders! If you’re looking for handmade primitives, crafts, or antiques, make sure you fill up on gas and plan your route! Check out the Woodlake Tree Farm 9th Annual Autumn Glory Spectacular for fall decorations, primitives, antiques, and more; the 15th Annual Quilt Show and Sale features local, handmade quilts both on display and available for purchase; the Autumn Glory Fallmania Craft & Vendor Show features a wide variety of products from local crafters and vendors; the Heritage Craft Fest is one of our favorites, located in Southern Middle School and Broadford Elementary School, and offers wonderful items for sale; and the 44th Annual Civic Club Antique Vintage & Collectible Sale hosts more than 30 dealers with antiques and collectibles! Other Friday events include the Maryland State Banjo & Mandolin Championship!

Saturday - October 14

Several of Friday's events also take place on Saturday, including most of the craft shows and local sales. Add the Autumn Glory Craft & Gift Sale at the Garrett County Fairgrounds to your stop and shop list for Saturday or Sunday and browse through a very wide array of local goods and products. A local favorite for children on Saturday is the musical puppet show downtown at 11:30 am! The main event for Saturday, though, is the Grand Feature Parade, which kicks off at the top of Second Street at 1 pm. Last year, we teamed up with Deep Creek Lodging Company to build our very first float, and we're so excited to debut this year's creation!! The streets of Oakland are filled with people all day and it's an absolutely incredible environment and the place to be. Local food vendors are serving up delicious treats all day, there are wonderful new shops downtown to explore, and it's forecasted to be a beautiful day! Deep Creek Lodging will also have a booth set up on Third Street, stop by for free goodies and say hello. Saturday evening you can enjoy the Western Maryland Tournament of the Bands, which features marching bands from the tri-state area, or the Official Maryland State Fiddle Championship!

Sunday - October 15

Sunday morning kicks off with the annual Mountain Top Cruisers Car Show in downtown Oakland! With beautifully preserved antique cars to awesomely modified muscle cars to everything in between, it's a fun way to spend your morning. You can also still enjoy most of the sales and craft shows on Sunday! If you're up for the challenge, make sure to check out the No Hands Sundae Eating Contest at the Lakeside Creamery at 1 pm. This is also the last day that the Lakeside Creamery will be open until next spring! Another fun Sunday event is the Great Pumpkin Race and Decorating Festival at ASCI. Come early to decorate your hopeful pumpkin before it's plopped into the whitewater course in hopes of reaching the end! The weather for Sunday is forecasted to be absolutely perfect, so it should be a fantastic end to an awesome weekend.

Whether it's the breathtaking fall foliage or the incredible energy that fills the atmosphere, Autumn Glory is a special time for our community. There are so many things to do and experience! And while Garrett County weather, especially in October, can be unpredictable at best, the forecast starting Friday shows plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures to top off the weekend. You can find more information and the full list of events here. We hope to see everyone out and about this weekend! Happy Autumn Glory!
