Part of what makes our local community so wonderful are the many programs offered to children. From educational outreach to basic life skills, many Garrett County children rely on some of the free programs offered by local organizations. The Garrett College Foundation deemed October to be ‘I Can Swim!’ month to help gain support and raise awareness for the 'I Can Swim!' program. This program is held at the Garrett County Community Aquatic and Recreation Center (CARC), which was a much needed addition to Garrett County.
'I Can Swim!' was founded in 2011 to teach kindergarten children both how to swim and basic water safety. The program is free to all Garrett County kindergarten students and is set to the Red Cross curriculum. Buses will transport students from their public schools to the CARC directly after school for the four-day course. After students have completed the course, they’ll receive a certificate and a discounted family membership to the CARC for one year. This program is also open to home-schooled children in kindergarten.
We are so happy to donate and support such a wonderful program. Part of our Railey Realty family has personally dealt with the tragedy of losing a child to drowning, so it hits home with us. Living in Garrett County provides so many beautiful waterways for children and their families to play and splash in, like Deep Creek Lake and Broadford Lake, and teaching water safety and basic swimming instruction is an important skill set to teach early on.
