Garrett County’s tourism metrics continue to show increases as we move towards the end of FY18. Heads on Beds in Garrett County is up 12.2%, Accommodation Sales Collections is up 6.3%, and tourism sales tax revenue is up 5.5%. While these numbers are encouraging on their own, they’re even more impressive when compared to other areas in Maryland and the state as a whole. The state of Maryland realized an increase of 2% in tourism sales tax revenues compared to Garrett County’s 5.5% increase. Garrett County and the Deep Creek Lake area have consistently seen increases in tourism-based metrics. The Garrett County Chamber of Commerce has been hard at work developing new ways to promote our area, including their new 360 degree virtual tour.
These increases help give Garrett County and Deep Creek Lake more leverage when applying for funding. As a largely tourism fueled area, receiving additional funding to help promote our area and funds to maintain and protect our area are vital for Deep Creek’s future success. Garrett County received just under $100,000 in state tourism marketing match grant funds, which is 6.6% higher than the previous year. The county has also been able to secure funding for the State Lake Restoration & Protection fund and secured increased funding for tourism promotion.
We’re very excited to see Garrett County and Deep Creek Lake growing! From restaurants to vacation rentals to real estate, all of the area businesses share the same goal: promote and share our beautiful area with visitors.
