Top Things to Do in July | 2020 Edition

Summer is in full swing at the lake! We've had absolutely gorgeous weather the last few weeks, with temps in the high 70s and low 80s and plenty of sunshine. July is typically a dry, hot month for Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County. Never fear, though, we're still 10-15 degrees cooler than most nearby cities at lower elevations! While Maryland is still in Phase II, most of the area activities are open and ready for your next adventure. We're breaking down some of our top things to do this month!

Fire on the Mountain Fireworks Display - The Garrett County Chamber of Commerce launches off the area's best fireworks show every year on July 4! The fireworks are launched from the top of Wisp Resort's tubing park and burst in the air high above the waters in McHenry Cove. The fireworks can be viewed from most places in the immediate McHenry area - many people watch from boats on the water, too! If parking along any road, use extreme caution when crossing the road. Social distancing is encouraged during viewing the fireworks display! The fireworks will be set off at dark on July 4, with a rain date of July 5. You can get updates on the fireworks on the chamber's Facebook page or from WKHJ 104.5 on the radio.

Deep Creek Lavender Farrm - Now is the best time to visit the Deep Creek Lavender Farm! Lavender has its peak bloom times during the month of July. Walk through the beautiful lavender fields, cut your own lavender, join others in fun wreath making classes, or just buy some of the incredible lavender products. It's also a great place to have a relaxing picnic! The Deep Creek Lavender farm is located just a few miles north of the lake area. You can view their current hours here

Outdoor Recreation - From go-cart fast tracks to relaxing hikes, there's plenty to do outside! All outdoor and most indoor recreation is permitted with some guidelines in place. You can zip through the trees on the towering zip-line at Wisp Resort or test your agility on the suspended Spiker Monkey ropes course - there's even a smaller version for children! Wisp also has a wonder disc golf course and offers scenic charlift rides. Head over to Funland or Deep Creek Funzone for tons of fun and thrills for the whole family!! Enjoy mini-golf, go-carts, rock climbing, and more! Both facilities also have indoor arcades that are open with a few restrictions for safety in place. Check with each company before going to get the full run down on current practices and restrictions.

Hit the Lake - This is what summer is all about! Now is the perfect time to enjoy all that the lake life has to offer. The water is still cool and refreshing and feels so good on a hot summer afternoon. You can rent kayaks and stand-up paddleboards from stores like High Mountain Sports - they'll even deliver them right to your home! Wisp Resort also rents paddleboards and kayaks from their stand at Deep Creek Lake State Park. If you rent a boat - don't forget to rent a tube! Tubing is one of the most fun ways to enjoy the water and is perfect for almost all ages. The best times to kayak, paddleboard, waterski, or watersurf is usually first thing in the morning when there's less boat traffic and smooth, glassy waters. We'll see you out there!

Summer is off and running at the lake - don't miss this beautiful season! There's still plenty of ways and opportunities available to safely enjoy all the area has to offer. Happy July!
