The year 2020 marks the 95th Anniversary of Deep Creek Lake! In the early 1920s, C.M. Railey was among the loggers who cleared what is now the lakebed. The Pennsylvania Electric Company installed the hydro-electric dam, filled it with water from the surrounding tributaries, and Deep Creek Lake was created.
Prior to 1925, the Deep Creek Lake area has been a vacation spot for visitors from nearby cities. Famous guests to the area include Henry Ford, Albert Einstein, and U.S. President Grover Cleveland. Since the lake was created, it’s been a destination for travelers to escape the heat and hustle of suburban areas and get back to nature.
The Garrett County Chamber of Commerce planned a wonderful weekend to celebrate the 95th Anniversary of the lake, which unfortunately, had to be postponed given the circumstances with the COVID-19 pandemic. While some of our plans were cancelled with the anniversary weekend, we were still able to move forward with one of our main initiatives for the celebration.
Railey Realty pledged to donate $20 per closed sale during the month of June to the Deep Creek Watershed Foundation. After a tremendous June with nearly 100 closed sales, Railey Realty was able to donate $1,970 to the foundation.
The Deep Creek Watershed Foundation is a local nonprofit that works with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and other local agencies to help preserve and protect Deep Creek Lake and the surrounding watershed area. The lake and watershed, through both natural and external causes, face challenges that threaten the ecosystem, water quality, and viability of the lake itself. Shoreline erosion, water quality management, acid mine drainage, and the prevention of zebra mussels are just a few of the main objectives the Deep Creek Watershed is focusing on. Their partnership and efforts with local agencies and resources allows them to make informed and logical decisions that will directly benefit the watershed.
