Top 3 Winter Hikes to Take at Deep Creek Lake

Don't let winter weather keep you indoors! Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County, Maryland turn into a magical winter wonderland during the cooler months. Even if there's not snow on the ground, it's always nice to get some fresh mountain air! Usually by December, Muddy Creek Falls is covered in stunning ice as the rushing river water freezes. In addition to just hiking, most of the local parks offer trails perfect for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Check out our top three places to go hiking in the winter in the Deep Creek area! These parks offers relatively flat terrain and trails that makes them a bit easier for winter weather hiking.

Swallow Falls State Park

Most locals and visitors alike visit Swallow Falls during every season because it's a different experience every time you go! As a mostly evergreen forest and park, the magic of the forest can be felt long after the leaves have fallen. Once the ground is coated in a blanket of snow, the park becomes a true winter wonderland. During the winter months, Muddy Creek Falls - Maryland's tallest free-falling waterfall - begins to freeze, creating a stunning icy display. Typically at some point during the winter, the falls will completely freeze over, with the water running below the surface. The Swallows Falls State Park loop is just under a mile, passing by several beautiful waterfalls, before bringing you back to the main entrance. It's a nice, easy hike no matter the weather!

Honorable Mentions

Deep Creek Lake State Park

The lakeside portion of the park offers views of the water and is relatively flat. The trails across the road, however, are much more diverse, and will provide a more challenging hike. These trails are awesome, but might be a bit tougher to conquer with snow and ice on the grounds.

Fork Run Recreation Area

Located just over the top of Marsh Mountain and Wisp Resort, Fork Run Recreation Area offers a private setting and miles of trails. There aren't a lot of great views from Fork Run, but it's still an awesome place to explore!
