The Garrett County Board of Commissioners proposed a reduction for the Real Property Tax to go into affect for the upcoming fiscal year. The new rate would be $1.02 per $100 of assessed value, a drop from the current of $1.056.
The drop was a long time coming, as any kind of tax drop was put on hold amid the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic. As Garrett County pulled through the early 2020s with strong tourism and economy, the commissioners felt it was time to implement a Real Property Tax decrease.
It's important to note that Garrett County sets the property tax rate, but the State of Maryland determines assessed property values. Properties are assessed on a triennial basis and factors are determined by the State.
