Holiday Events
Festival of Trees - While the holiday season has already begun, Festival of Trees really kicks off the Christmas Season! Taking place the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving this year, Festival of Trees showcases dozens of incredible trees, all locally designed and donated. In addition to walking through the tree aisles, enjoy Breakfast with Santa, kids corner activities, and dozens of local vendors. The trees and other items are auctioned off Saturday evening. All proceeds from this event help to support The Dove Center, a local domestic violence shelter that provides temporary and long-term housing for those in need.
Christmas in the Village - A local favorite! Browse dozens of local artisans and vendors at Spruce Forest Artisan Village in Grantsville, Maryland. Located beside Casselman River Bridge State Park, you can walk across the historic bridge and through the adorable village browsing and shopping! The entire bridge and village lined with luminaries, making it even better at night! Enjoy the festivities Friday evening and all day Saturday.
Small Town Christmas - Downtown Oakland hosts a wonderful Christmas & holiday celebration every year! They typically host their tree-lighting ceremony Friday evening and the town celebration continues all weekend! Stores offer wonderful specials, restaurants are open with specials, and the whole town is decorated with beautiful holiday lights. It's even better in the snow! The town usually offers horse-drawn sleigh rides (snow or shine!), live music, and free pictures with Santa.
Christmas Lights Show - Head over to the Oakland Armory, park your car, tune in to the radio station, and listen in the comfort of your car while you watch an incredible light show set to music! The show starts every 30 minutes, but you can stop by and view it no matter the time! It's constantly 'performing.' It's a local favorite! Grab some take out and enjoy the show in your car!
Holiday Shopping
The best part of our small community is that the vast majority of our retail businesses are locally-owned small businesses. That means you're not only finding unique gifts, but you're supporting a small business! From sporting equipment to books to clothing, there's a store for everyone! Most stores are located close to each other - especially at The Fort and in Downtown Oakland. You can also check out vendor events, where you can browse tons of local artisans and vendors together! If you're up for a roadtrip, downtown Thomas, WV and nearby Davis, WV have adorable downtown storefronts packed with small businesses and shops...perfect for an afternoon trip shopping trip.
