Winter kicked off to a great start in December and we're expecting more snow as the New Year comes in! Wisp Resort was able to open all sides of the mountain in December - something that hasn't happened in a long time!! Despite a quick warm up, cold temps and snow are back in the forecast and we expect a cold and snowy January. Check out some of our favorite activities and things to do this month at Deep Creek Lake in January below!

Visit Wisp Resort (even if you don’t ski) - The biggest draw of Wisp Resort during the winter months is definitely downhill skiing and snowboarding. But if you’re not up for skiing or want to try something else, Wisp Resort is still the place to go for all the action! They feature a groomed tubing park with two magic carpets to take you to the top, the year-round mountain coaster, and escape room adventures!! It’s basically your one-stop winter action center. You can usually get ticket discounts when combining the adventure park activities, too. If you're interested in snow-tubing, make sure to make your reservations ahead of time, as time slots fill up fast. Enjoy new upgrades around the resort and inside the lodge, too!
Get Outside - Okay, we know it’s cold, but we promise it’s worth it to head outside during the winter months!! Especially for those traveling from lower elevations, winter at Deep Creek Lake is an entirely different world than winter in Baltimore or Pittsburgh. Many local state parks offer paths for cross-country skiing and usually provide daily updates on conditions on social media. Swallow Falls State Park is absolutely breathtaking in the winter and is a guaranteed winner for your Instagram followers. The lake will also freeze soon, and it’s also pretty neat to say you’ve walked on the frozen lake! **It’s always very important to make sure the ice is at a safe depth before venturing out onto it.
Explore Local Dining - New restaurants are opening up all the time, old restaurants are changing their menus - it’s always worth it to mix it up! Ace’s Run is known for changing their menu every few months and Pawn Run Bar & Kitchen recently released their new menu. Some of the newer eateries and spots in the area include 206 Alder Bistro & Bar and Green Room Lounge in Oakland, Brewery and the Beast in Accident, and Harvest House just outside of McHenry at the Market on 42. Whether you're looking to try something new or indulge in your favorite comfort foods, it's the perfect time of year to get a cozy meal inside.
Visit Nearby Attractions - We spend a lot of time telling you all the great things about Deep Creek Lake, and one of the best things about our area is our central location. Nearby attractions perfect for a day or afternoon trip include Timberline Mountain Ski Resort, Blackwater Falls State Park, Canaan Valley Resort, Seven Springs Resort, and Alpine Lake Resort! Blackwater Falls State Park is spectacular on its own, but even more beautiful in the winter. Their sledding hill offers a carpet to take you to the top and rentals for the fun! There aren’t many public or safe places around here to really sled, so it’s well worth the 45 minute trip. Plus, Thomas and Davis, WV, are both really neat areas that have fantastic dining many Garrett County locals travel to often.
Hopefully you get the chance to brave the elements and experience winter at Deep Creek Lake! Think snow!
