Top Things to Do in May at Deep Creek Lake

Can you feel it? Summer is just around the corner!! Memorial Day Weekend has always been the unofficial start to summer, and it’s no different at Deep Creek Lake. Docks are in the water. Boats are on the lake. The sun is shining. All you have to do is go enjoy it! While the water is still a little on the cool side, nothing will stop Memorial Day Weekenders from jumping in. If you’re visiting the area during May or looking for something fun or different to do - we’ve got you covered!

Kayaking at Deep Creek Lake

HART for Animals Kick Off to Summer Event - Join us for the revamped version of the HART Guest Bartending series at Dutch's at Silver Tree on Thursday May 28. The event will feature a silent auction, live music, pet costume contest, and more! HART for Animals is a local animal shelter that offers a supportive and nurturing environment for homeless pets. The HART facility now includes a Bed 'N Bark overnight doggy daycare, grooming, and an on-site vet clinic, too!

Amazing Grazing/Taste of Garrett - After a few years away, this classic event made a comeback last year and is scheduled again for this year! Head to the Garrett County Fairgrounds Tuesday May 12 5-8 PM to enjoy a wide variety of local restaurants in one place! Purchasing tickets in advance is advised as this event has been known to sell out. The event is a fundraiser for Stage WEST, a local arts nonprofit that helps schedule performances and events in the area.

Hit the Water - We know the water in the lake and most of the rivers is still a little cold for swimming…but it’s perfect for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding! May is a great month to take advantage of the sunshine and the lighter lake traffic. Several local businesses rent kayaks and paddleboards - most will also deliver them to your house! If you’re taking your first swing at stand-up paddleboarding, having smoother waters will lessen your learning curve. If you’re coming in for Memorial Day, make sure you reserve all of your water equipment or boat now to make sure you don’t miss out!!

Grab Your First Cone of the Year - Now that summer is just around the corner, all of your favorite ice cream spots are back open!! Stop in by car or boat at the Lakeside Creamery and enjoy their homemade ice cream and waffle cones or drive up just past the Railey Realty main office and stop at Katie’s Ice Cream! Other seasonal spots open now are Bear Creek Creamery (next to Shop ’N Save) and Devler’s Ice Cream (downtown Oakland)!

After a late spring, we’re more than ready for warm temps and lots of sunshine! Whether you’re itching to get on the water or just looking forward to soaking up the sun, May is the perfect month to satisfy those cravings.
